Rainbows / L'arc-en-ciel

A rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky. It takes the form of a multicoloured arc. Rainbows caused by sunlight always appear in the section of sky directly opposite the sun.

Un arc-en-ciel est un phénomène optique et météorologique (on parle de photométéore) qui rend visible le spectre continu de la lumière du ciel quand le soleil brille pendant la pluie. C'est un arc coloré avec le rouge à l'extérieur et le violet à l'intérieur.

Birds / Les Oiseaux Sharp Shinned Hawk - Épervier brun

The sharp-shinned hawk (Accipiter striatus) is a small hawk with males being the smallest hawks in the United States and Canada

 This is a small Accipiter hawk, with males 23 to 30 cm (9.1 to 11.8 in) long, with a wingspan of 42 to 58 cm (17 to 23 in)

These birds surprise and capture most their prey from cover or while flying quickly through dense vegetation. They are adept at navigating dense thickets and many attacks are successful, although this hunting method is often hazardous to the hawk. The great majority of this hawk's prey are small birds, especially various songbirds such as sparrows, wood-warblers, finches, wrens, and nuthatches,

Typically, males will target smaller birds, such as sparrows and wood-warblers, and females will pursue larger prey, such as American robins and flickers, leading to a lack of conflict between the sexes for prey. These hawks often exploit backyard bird feeders in order to target congregations of ideal prey.

One has been through my backyard where I have a number of feeders. Their home base is around the play structure in Chapel Hill Park. Remember this a small hawk and you may mistake it perching in a tree for a large robin or small crow.

Épervier brun

On ne l'entend généralement que pendant la saison de reproduction.

Les éperviers bruns capturent leurs proies en essayant de profiter au maximum de l'effet de surprise. Ils effectuent leur approche grâce à un vol bas et furtif, profitant du couvert ou des structures humaines pour révéler leur présence au dernier moment.

Taken 1 Nov 2011. Look dead centre of the photo sitting on the fence. I now say this is a relation and they have been in the area for several years. They are know to return to their birthplace.

Nature on Meadowfield Place

For the enjoyment of all I have started this blog to showcase the photos and videos of our street's residents and their interest in nature that is all around our homes in all four seasons.

In providing this venue, I would hope that all of you will dust off your camera and start shooting. Pictures from previous years are welcome.

For the moment you can send your pictures to me and I will upload them on this site. If at all possible I would ask that you identify what you send. In this way it will be educational for others who see that plant or insect and now can put a name to it. Where possible I will include links to the English and French Wikipedia entries so one can learn more. The more pictures for each entry, the better.

And yes, humans are part of nature, so don't be shy about sharing a great face or expression or activity.

Feel free to share this site with others on the street, the more the merrier. But the pictures should have been taken somewhere on Meadowfield Place.

You can make the picture larger by double clicking on the selected picture.

For the sake of privacy, the initials of the taker will be the only identifier attached to a photo until I get your OK to post your name or an abbreviated form of your name, ie Just a first name. 

Remember, this is a work-in-progress. When you start scratching the surface, you soon realize there is a lot of Nature on our street. We need to take the time to observe more and I am sure we will say we live on a wonderful street.
